People need to drop Facebook right now. They should have done it a long time ago, but now is better than later.
I keep hearing the excuse that leaving Facebook is too hard because your friends and family are there. That's the problem!
You may not fall for disinformation, but your presence gives others a reason to be there. Don't be a part of the problem. Don't be a part of the reason that others stick around and absorb disinfo.
Get out now, and find another way to stay in touch.
Mind you, I know enough about compression to know what I was buying when I invested in this solution, but a significant consumer of LTO tapes are video producers and other media professionals, and they are never going to get the capacities advertised front and center because they are based on an absurd assumption that probably only applies to enterprise use cases.
If you're backing up audio, video, or photos, you're going to have to assume native capacity. If there was some magical way to compress h264/h265 video down 2.5:1, people would be using it.
I can't imagine what the LTO Consortium thinks people would be backing up if they need the kinds of capacities supported by modern LTO tapes.
Just print the native capacity, and let me worry about compression. They print "45TB*" on the front of their 18TB LTO-9 tapes, and that feels like a scam.
I've been embracing LTO tapes as a personal long-term backup solution, and so far I'm very impressed by the cost efficiency for a very large amount of data storage. $0.004/GB is phenomenal.
But these "compressed" storage capacities are wild. "Assuming 2.5:1 compression"? That's a hell of an assumption. I guess if I were backing up 6.25TB of text or code or something I could pull that off on a 2.5TB tape, but c'mon now, it's just SLDC (LZS) compression. It isn't magic...
One of the things in here is "Garfield: A Character Analysis" which is a typewritten document detailing the motivations and character history of Garfield, a cartoon cat.
I will transcribe this at some point soon and make it available.
It is a *16 page* document.

@BeAware That's fine, I am saying that one of the Admins ("damon") of WeDistribute came into my mentions, called me "gross", and challenged me to gamble with him because I criticized a corporation. I am blocking the entire instance because they have a toxic admin. I am already familiar with their organization and their poor quality reporting. If you don't think my call isn't a good one, you can ignore it, this hashtag sees like 2 posts a week, you can filter it the signal from the noise I bet.
@BeAware And for the record, if the admin of any instance finds their way into my mentions trying to get me to gamble with them, the whole instance can go in the trash as far as I am concerned.
I'm a single-user instance. I can defederate whoever I please. I might as well say something as I go, since this is a huge red flag from an admin.
@MoiraEve I have a high-profile user putting me on blast about this now, so I might as well share what I was talking about.
Giving free PR to a company for something they didn't do, and keeping it up even after people in the comments tell you that you are wrong. Sounds like a Democratic Strategist to me.
@BeAware The admin "damon" has a threads.net link in their bio where they are far more active. They also harass people who talk bad about for-profit microblogging services like Threads and Bluesky. If that's what we can expect from WD's admins, I am done. They've had really poor reporting anyway.
@VE7WYC Using "Linux" as a pejorative. Yeah, not a place for me.
@Distante We do know how the Fediverse will react to a marketing campaign by a corporation: most instances have defederated Threads.
I'm not saying that misinformation doesn't happen here, but it certainly doesn't succeed here. I don't see posts stating something false with dozens of users agreeing in the comments like I do on Bluesky and Threads.
Sorry, but if you use Threads as your primary social network, I don't trust your reporting on the Fediverse. I was on-the-fence about #fediblock for a while, but Threads is such a catastrophe it's truly mind-boggling that the WeDistribute folks are endorsing it as a first class Fediverse participant.
Just caught some harassment from their admin for saying that Bluesky has misinformation on it (true). Don't get me started on Threads (where the election was "hacked at the tabulation level").
lmao, the WeDistribute Admin has their Facebook profile linked in their bio. #fediblock
@damon@social.wedistribute.org No, I think I'll just block you for immediately trying to turn this into an opportunity to gamble.
I've already given up on WeDistribute ever since you decided to give a glowing article to a Neo-Nazi agitator, now that I see that the Admin is a scold, I'll have no problem blocking this whole instance out of sight.
I figure in 10 years when LTO-9 becomes affordable on the secondhand market I can consolidate my tapes down 7:1.
