@CobaltVelvet Alex Gleason is such a strange case of a gender-nonconforming TERF.

I regrettably read their blog about "transgender ideology" and I could feel myself becoming stupider with every sentence. Complete cognitive dissonance.

And "Gleasonator" is such a garbage fire. Free speech absolutism leads to Nazism every time.

Pleroma devs and instances are almost always like this for some reason...

“Everything is a file”

Computing: Paradigm that underlies the incredibly successful Unix operating system

Woodworking: This is the worst workshop ever

@steveumstead @mollyjongfast they ban discrimination based on net worth. No making fun of Billionaires.

No rules against transphobia tho...

Twitter was never a healthy "public square" for most of us. Let's not rewrite history while eulogizing the hellsite.
Twitter was a frightening battleground where we managed barely to claw out an uneasy existence amidst the worst violent neo-Nazi extremists who constantly published our home addresses, threatened our kids' lives, and sent hordes of racist trolls into our mentions.
The same principles that allowed us to survive uneasily on Twitter will be required here in the #fediverse. Community defense, thoughtful pressure on moderation policies, and eternal vigilance.
There are no safe spaces but those we make safe through constant effort. We keep us safe.

Trickle down economics was invented by conservatives in the 1980s to justify massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. It’s been nothing short of a disaster.

Transphobia on Tumblr

Whole blogs dedicated to spreading fear about trans people. Reporting everything I can find and not seeing anything get fixed.

Transphobia on Tumblr

Can't wait to see Tumblr join the Fediverse and immediately get defederated by all the major players for hosting overtly transphobic blogs.

Hopefully they get their house in order before implementing ActivityPub.

I recommend a preemptive until they prove they will be ethical players here.

So these discs were my first ever experience with Linux. I was 14 and took a summer class on coding that was also an intro to Linux. We got the book that came bundled with these discs, I don't remember what came on them besides Fedora (which I should probably pop them in and find out). But this is what started my long term love hate relationship with Linux.

@weareintolerant Small but very important correction: Swartz was never convicted of any crime or sentenced to any prison time.

What prosecutors were seeking was outrageously over-the-top, and he was a victim of deliberate malicious targeting by the justice system, but he did not die a convicted criminal.

You are one baton from a cop from becoming Disabled. One car accident away. One eviction gone wrong, one violent attack. You able bodies are one workers accident away but on an inevitable course of time to join us. It is time you began studying including disabled bodies.

“We've arranged a society based on #science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science and technology. This combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces.”

if you've ever messed up a dimension or a hole position on something you're building, don't be too hard on yourself.

at least you're not the Cisco design engineer who caused an entire product line recall by placing the mode button (which resets the switch if held) directly above an RJ45 port.

After two years of negotiations with Microsoft, the joint committee of the German federal data protection authority and 17 state regulators (DSK) published a devastating statement that essentially says that organizations currently cannot use MS365 in a lawful way under the GDPR.

@slothrop There are efforts being made to provide end-to-end encryption here, so hopefully we'll be in a better position than Twitter soon.

Until then, people can connect on third party platforms for messaging.

Still better than "the entire Twitter mod team can read your DMs".

I honestly don’t get the whole excitement about “on Mastodon, admins can read your DMs” or “DMs on Mastodon are totally different from Twitter”.

They’re not. Did people honestly think that their Twitter DMs were “private” in any meaningful sense?

Jesus F. Christ.

I was a little bit sus about Stephen Fry being on Mastodon given his comments on "cancel culture" and friendliness with the gender critical movement and people like Jordan Peterson, but he appears so far to be a good faith contributor here, and he can be pretty funny, so for now I'm following him.

I won't be boosting him though. I understand he's controversial and completely understand why people wouldn't want to hear what he has to say.
