I honestly don’t get the whole excitement about “on Mastodon, admins can read your DMs” or “DMs on Mastodon are totally different from Twitter”.

They’re not. Did people honestly think that their Twitter DMs were “private” in any meaningful sense?

@slothrop There are efforts being made to provide end-to-end encryption here, so hopefully we'll be in a better position than Twitter soon.

Until then, people can connect on third party platforms for messaging.

Still better than "the entire Twitter mod team can read your DMs".

@Alex @slothrop I don't understand that part though. If E2EE is part of DMs, then how do you report abusive messages? The Admin can't see them, so can't confirm that they are real? Surely then you could end up with people claiming to the admin that they received a message from someone that said something, that it didn't say, and there is no way to prove it one way of another.

@Alex @slothrop (give that if it is in a web-browser, it is ridiculously easy to change it to say anything)
