Fascism friendly platforms

Forget your outrage about the Joe Rogan Podcast and type "1488", "SS Waffen", or "White Pride" into Spotify search.

They're not even pretending to moderate their platform. Not talking about the JPEGMafia song, that one slaps. Just take a scroll through all the fashy podcasts and playlists.

Terminating my account in favor of Deezer, which appears to proactively find and delete hateful and violent content from their service.

How I'm beginning to feel about Twitter and Meta:

“You know, when I was a girl, the idea that the British Empire could ever end was absolutely inconceivable. And it just disappeared, like all the other empires.” — Doris Lessing

Mastodon is now at 1 million users … same as Twitter was in 2008 when I joined (as @james_slezak@twitter.com )

Just a reminder that "self-hosted" doesn't *necessarily* have to mean literally hosting on a computer in your house. It just means you're in control over it.

@kevin nice! Thanks!

I've migrated to S3 for simplicity. Might give Spaces another go sometime in the future if the flat pricing ends up more attractive than AWS pricing.

Glad to understand how to Alias. Plan to use my own domain eventually, so I'll need it.

Took a fun photo of the Bellevue skyline reflecting sunset from the Leschi neighborhood in Seattle.

Some of you are likely already aware of this, but I organize a group called PhilTel aiming to install free-to-use payphones in Philadelphia. We are having an install party at @iffybooks on December 17th where we will install our first phone (more info here, iffybooks.net/event/philtel-fr)!

We will also be distributing a zine that explains the project and some of the interesting things you can do with the phone.

Hope to see you there! philtel.org

@kevin Yeah, I migrated all my files to the root the way the docs said to, and after changing my config and restarting the service, all the images were broken because they contained the bucket name as the parent folder.

Doing a right-click, Open Image, and removing the bucket name from the directory tree took me to the appropriate files.

My next worry is that new files are going to end up in the root and further break things when I try again.

@kevin Weird... I wonder why I had different results?

@kevin Yeah, my server is the smallest compatible droplet, and instead of splitting Compute and Storage between DO and AWS, I figured I'd store it all in the same datacenter.

@kevin After migrating all my data, I found that the files are expected to be stored in

'bucket.region.digitaloceanspaces.com/bucket'

instead of just

'bucket.region.digitaloceanspaces.com'

No idea why, but moving all 150k files one directory deeper kept failing, so I restored from the snapshot I took before I made changes, and plan to start over from scratch with that caveat in mind.

@kevin Yes please! I've been following the cybrespace instructions, but I ran into a URL caveat.

Though it might because I am using DigitalOcean Spaces (S3-compliant).

The guide I am using: github.com/cybrespace/cybrespa

All these new servers/users/followers are filling my poor little single-user instance up with data fast. There's so many of you!

Already knocked myself offline trying to move everything to S3, and failing at it.

I know what I did wrong, so I'll be trying again later today after sanity checking my process.

I can only imagine what it must be like to run a big instance. o7 to the community admins out there. Thank you for your service.

Also, it's really handy to have a $25/year linux VM in the cloud with lots of net bandwidth to which I forward ports via autossh from trash computers in my basement.

Today in a meeting I joked that I wanted to display bad apple on the IP phone that my employer gave to me.

That's a nice evening project, so I'll take you on the journey of trying to get this working. [Thread]
