Here's what I'm missing from twitter (though twitter no longer delivers this either) sometimes I'd log on to twitter and there would be some HUGE drama going down in a community I'm only adjacent to-- for example some scandal with a pastor at a church in another city-- or fans of music I don't know much about excited about a live performance -- or a big protest half-way across the world--

There was a feeling of being one little tidal pool connected to a big ocean.

@futurebird That's happening here, too. Just recently there was a big hullabaloo about raspberry pi and a surveillance cop and lots of drama I'm not part of. Follow some hashtags and you'll run into it for sure. When you follow hashtags you get posts in your Home timeline that are from all over the place, not just who you follow. And just follow more people ... you'll see what they see, and your Mastodon world gets bigger.

@kimberlyseville

IDK I think I follow more than enough people and topics. Like did you even check my follows before giving me brand-new-user advice?

I wasn't posting this to be reassured that it isn't a problem. It is a problem. One that will improve with growth. We hope.

It's important to clearly describe problems. Doing so doesn't mean that everyone will give up and leave. Gotta resist that urge to be overprotective of this new place.

@futurebird @kimberlyseville start following everyone you can see, that exponentially increases your view of the wider network

@jeff @kimberlyseville

I could follow every person in the fediverse and I'm still not going to see thriving twitter sub-communities centered around black churches in Chicago because they are simply not here.

@futurebird @kimberlyseville you'll find things that are faaaar more diverse and vibrant

@jeff @kimberlyseville

That's an incorrect and condescending assumption you are making about me. That I "just haven't tried" -- uh huh.

@futurebird @kimberlyseville you wont find more people with a chip on your shoulder and a refusal to explore what is here now

@jeff @kimberlyseville

It's wild that you think I have a "chip on my shoulder"

You should examine why you think that. Because just like your assumption that I was a dude it's something you are projecting on to me-- and not the reality I'm presenting.

@futurebird @kimberlyseville i have shit eyesight, it's not on you. you seem to think fedi is twitter. it isnt and it never will be and that is a profoundly good thing. twitter is a vile cesspool of dopamine addiction and algorithmic ragebait sold to sustain and immoral status quo of digital serfdom. here we are free to follow who we want, if this is not valuable then fedi is not for you.

@jeff @kimberlyseville

OK I get it now this is an effort to arrest change to a space you see as *yours* but not *mine.*

Good luck with that.

@futurebird @kimberlyseville we here before you arrive and will be here after you go back to twitter

@jeff @kimberlyseville

If you were trying to show that mastodon isn't insular and lacking in variety in communities saying "we here before you arrive and will be here after you go back to twitter" isn't helping your case.

Listen, I know it's annoying when an online place starts changing-- but the growth is what this place was always supposed to be about-- taking the place of corporate owned sites.

And try no to talk like this to new users. It's a huge turn off.

@futurebird Just a heads up that this person is a right-wing troll with 100+ posts per day, slurs in their timeline, and a clear intent to harass people.

They're also posting links to you trying to encourage a dogpile from their followers.

@Alex aw but I'm having so much fun!

(I mean I suspected as much)
