People need to drop Facebook right now. They should have done it a long time ago, but now is better than later.

I keep hearing the excuse that leaving Facebook is too hard because your friends and family are there. That's the problem!

You may not fall for disinformation, but your presence gives others a reason to be there. Don't be a part of the problem. Don't be a part of the reason that others stick around and absorb disinfo.

Get out now, and find another way to stay in touch.

@Alex people won’t leave without an easy, usable alternative. The vast majority of people don’t want to set up their own servers running open source software, so they put on the blinkers and keep posting to Facebook.

@YurkshireLad Honestly, there's nothing wrong with returning to email, instant messaging, and niche forums. I know that sounds old fashioned, but people were social on the Internet well before the advent of social networking.

It's probably healthier too. Social networks made socializing worse, just as dating apps made dating worse. Sometimes we need to ask what exactly we're getting from these tech companies other than the illusion of convenience.

@YurkshireLad I love the fediverse, and recommend it to plenty of people, but I accept that it isn't a replacement for most people.

I get along here because it's a really tech savvy place, but that's not something that attracts everyone.

I'm nostalgic for the early years of social networking, but those days are long behind us...
