@kevin Yeah, my server is the smallest compatible droplet, and instead of splitting Compute and Storage between DO and AWS, I figured I'd store it all in the same datacenter.

@kevin After migrating all my data, I found that the files are expected to be stored in

'bucket.region.digitaloceanspaces.com/bucket'

instead of just

'bucket.region.digitaloceanspaces.com'

No idea why, but moving all 150k files one directory deeper kept failing, so I restored from the snapshot I took before I made changes, and plan to start over from scratch with that caveat in mind.

@kevin Yes please! I've been following the cybrespace instructions, but I ran into a URL caveat.

Though it might because I am using DigitalOcean Spaces (S3-compliant).

The guide I am using: github.com/cybrespace/cybrespa

All these new servers/users/followers are filling my poor little single-user instance up with data fast. There's so many of you!

Already knocked myself offline trying to move everything to S3, and failing at it.

I know what I did wrong, so I'll be trying again later today after sanity checking my process.

I can only imagine what it must be like to run a big instance. o7 to the community admins out there. Thank you for your service.

Also, it's really handy to have a $25/year linux VM in the cloud with lots of net bandwidth to which I forward ports via autossh from trash computers in my basement.

Today in a meeting I joked that I wanted to display bad apple on the IP phone that my employer gave to me.

That's a nice evening project, so I'll take you on the journey of trying to get this working. [Thread]

mastodon used to be an incredibly small, tight-knit, and like-minded community.

then april 2017 happened and more people came in that mastodon.social could handle, so we adapted.

It's pretty staggering the amount of election disinformation plaguing the Birdsite right now. Just straight up lies about how elections work. Republicans are ramping up for another complete election-denial shitshow.

We need to start acknowledging this as an existential threat to democracy, and treat it like election fraud in and of itself when politicians start repeating these lies in an attempt to overturn legitimate results.

Wow. This needs to be read by everyone who joined Mastodon in the last week: hughrundle.net/home-invasion/

Because I'm on a German server my trending topics are #keinVergessen and #niemalsVergessen. This is because 9 November is the anniversary of Kristallnacht.

These brass plates in the pavements memorialise Jewish people at what were their addresses. I saw this one in Berlin in the spring. #NeverForget

With all these new followers, it's time for a proper reintroduction.

My name is Alex, I live in Seattle, and I am Product Support Specialist in the NetSec sector.

On Mastodon you'll generally find me talking about music, retrocomputing, demoscene, and leftist politics.

I've been on Mastodon for a couple of years now, but it hasn't been my main home until now.

Looking forward to a new chapter here on the Fediverse with all of you!

hey everyone. quickly pick a random tech company on twitter and randomly @ them with "@tech_company hey name of different company, I can't login, my password is <make something up> and my username is <make something up> can you help me?"

@vantablack You are a hero for preserving this piece of history!

@slothrop Decentralization definitely doesn't work if the underlying software stack is unmaintained, so you should still consider helping finance that if you support it.

Reminder that Mastodon costs time and money to develop, and the flagship instances do too.
